Six Famous People From Nevada

SIX FAMOUS PEOPLE FROM NEVADA

EVA BERTRAND ADAMS was born in Wonder, Nevada in 1908.  She went to school in Reno and graduated from the University of Nevada in 1928, then taught for a number of years and then went back to school – to Columbia University to get her Master’s degree in English in 1936.  She went on to get a Master’s degree in law from George Washington University.  She was a member of the bar in both Nevada and Washington, D.C. and practiced law before the Supreme Court in 1954.  President Kennedy appointed her Director of the U.S. Mint in 1961 and she remained in that position under President Johnson, until 1969.  Upon retirement, she went back to live in Reno.  She died there on August 23, 1991.

WALTER VAN TILBURG CLARK  was born in Maine in 1909, but grew up and attended college in Reno where his father was president of the University of Nevada.  He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Nevada.  His first novel, The Ox-Bow Incident   was published in 1940; in 1943, 20th Century Fox made a movie of that book.  The City of Trembling Leaves  came next, and his book, The Track of the Cat was out in 1949.  He also wrote many short stories and poetry during his life. He died in 1971, at the age of 62.

VELMA BRONN JOHNSTON was born on March 5, 1912, in Washoe County, and grew up on the family’s  “Double Lazy Heart Ranch”   When she married Charles Johnston they turned the ranch into a “dude ranch” for children.  She is well-known as an animal rights activist.  She led a campaign to stop the removal of wild horses and burros from public land and was instrumental in getting legislation passed to stop aircraft and land vehicles from being used to capture those wild horses and burros and causing their death.  The 92nd U.S. Congress passed the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971.  President Nixon signed it into law.
Johnston died of cancer on June 27, 1977, at the age of 65.

HARRY MASON REID  is the senior United States Senator from Nevada, and has been the Senate Majority Leader since January 2007.  He was born in Searchlight, Nevada on December 2, 1939.  He was also the Senate Minority Leader from 2005 until the Democrats won control of the Senate in the 2006 elections.  He is up for reelection in 2010, with some stiff competition.  There are several initiatives he has either sponsored or co-sponsored – The Prevention First Amendment  (with Hilary Clinton) that would fund abortion prevention efforts, He also brought to the Senate an ethics reform bill that would bar members of congress from accepting gifts, meals and trips from lobbyists.  He believes that Roe vs Wade should be overturned, though he believes in a “restricted right to abortion”  He has voted in favor of the Defense of Marriage Act BUT he’s against the Federal Marriage Amendment.  This just gives an idea of where he stands on some of the issues.  He makes his home in Searchlight, Nevada.

CARSON WAYNE NEWTON an American singer, was born in Roanoke, Virginia on April 3, 1942.  While he was still a child his family moved to Ohio.  There he began singing in local clubs and theaters.  For health reasons (he had asthma) the family relocated to Phoenix where he attended high school.  In 1958, a booking agent from Las Vegas saw Wayne on a local TV show.  As a result, he’s been based in Las Vegas, Nevada as an entertainer for over 40 years. He’s earned the nickname Mr. Las Vegas.

DOLORA ZAJICK was born in Salem, Oregon on March 24, 1952, but she was raised in Nevada.  She is an American opera star who “is arguably the leading exponent in the dramatic Verdian mezzo-soprano repertoire” (Wikipedia).   She has worked with the New York Metropolitan Opera.  She graduated from the University of Nevada in Reno and she still makes her home in Reno.
