How are horses determined in the derby or belmont?
I cant figure out how the horses are determined in the triple crown race. For example Guadacanal had never won a race but yet raced in the belmont. Please help me understand.
As long as the owner has paid the entry fee then any horse can run in a Group 1 race – there is no prerequisite to have won a race before.
If, come the final declaration stage, usually 24-48 hours before the race takes place, there are more horses entered than places available, only then will the least experienced horses be removed from the field. Over here we call it being “balloted out”.
