Suzuki is giving me the greenlight to get more out of life.
Yesterday, while walking through Downtown Crossing, I saw a velvet sports coat in a display window. I stopped for a closer look and discovered that the suits were all tastefully mismatched with French cuffs and vests and bright ties and I thought, +óGé¼+ôthis is the place for me.+óGé¼-¥ So I went it. The door was propped open and a man with one leg sat in the door. He answered the phone just as I came in. Another fellow was playing with cards or something; I don+óGé¼Gäót recall, but he was weird. The one legged man said, +óGé¼+ôLook, seriously I was in the hospital for six weeks. We+óGé¼Gäóve been doin+óGé¼Gäó business for thirty years and I never missed a payment.+óGé¼-¥ Pause. +óGé¼+ôI+óGé¼Gäóm not pulling your leg; I just had MY leg cut off.+óGé¼-¥ Pause. +óGé¼+ôYeah, come see for yourself.+óGé¼-¥
So I left.
I just pounded this out today while work was slow. The kernel of the story came to me on my honeymoon while playing with my wedding ring and trying come up with a story that Marika might like. This Bill Rockhart stuff is a nod to a story Bill Rockwood told me of his youth. The Incredible Life of Bill Rockhart
It’s not finished.
I’ve sent “Dr. Lee” to Asimovs. I will wait to hear from them before I send it else where. I sent it today after making several failed attempts on Friday (I didn’t have all my pieces together). The site says I should hear in 3 to 5 weeks.
Now I am working on a story I think represents a more accurate example of what would happen if aliens met in space; they wouldn’t know what to do with each other. This is in three parts: Trouble with Shielding, Trouble with Sensors, Trouble with Home. I hope to have the first part up in a few days.
I am printing and mailing a story tomorrow. I am writing this because if I don’t I can just let it slip and not tell anyone that I meant to do it and didn’t. I am sending the manuscript to Analog and Asimov.
