selling red worms?????????

I have a question for someone who sells red worms (I hope one of you who do read this). I started doing the worm thing this spring and they are doing great! I am about to harvest some black gold and was shocked by how much is down there. Even more shocking was the number of worms I have. The 1000 I started with looks to have grown to 10,000 or maybe more. I am going to move them to a bigger box but there will be a day not too far down the road that I am going to need to sell some. I could just let them go but would rather make a few $$$ off them. The question I have is how do you sort them from the soil and get the horse fly moggots out when you get them ready to sell them. I know there is about 1000 per pound but how do you get the pound in one bag without soil and unwanteds?

Congratulations! You obviously have the touch.

First, did you know that worms self-regulate their populations? They will not outgrow their surroundings. They adjust their birth rate. So, the great thing is that you can take some out, put them someplace else and they will reproduce to fill that spot. Your supply can be diminished, but not depleted if you leave some amount of worms behind. A great thing for keeping your stock going.

Their are several methods for separating the worms from the vermicompost you have made (the vermicompost is also worth a lot of money), and they depend on the size of your operation.

(1) Feed them on one side of your box, and the worms will travel on their own, leaving their vermicompost behind.

(2) Spread out the worms, compost and all, onto a large sheet of cardboard. Since worms hate the sun, they will scoot away towards the higher end of dirt you piled up. Then darken the area so that the worms won’t run, and you can gather them up with a minimum of “stuff”. How to get them super clean, I am not sure. Perhaps they are washed off with water, but I would do that carefully to not drown your worms.
