How do you make Customize Breyer horses?
I have some Breyer Horses of my own and I see alot of people customize them. I heard that when they are heated they are malleable so you can repostiion them. As for the painting customizing what paints are you supposed to use and how do they get them to look so nice? If anyone has an answer to this question that would be awesome because I want to start customizing my Breyers!
I would start with just repainting them, not trying to move their limbs around. I only repaint and do slight adjustments to the models I sell.
Paint: Acrylic paint can be bought for about $2 a bottle at places like Jo-Ann Fabric’s or A.C. Moore.
Brushes: Buy SMALL brushes. I rarely work with anything bigger then my pinky nail, even on Traditional scale horses. Make sure they are very soft and good quality. They should be soft so that you don’t get any streaks in the paint and good quality so you don’t have a bristle come loose and get left in the paint.
Sandpaper: Buy a fine sandpaper at Home Depot or some such place. Sand the entire model lightly to make the paint “stick” better. Sand down the seams and/or any rough spots on the model. Use a damp cloth to get all the dust off before painting.
When you are ready to start painting pick out a simple color to start with. Black is the easiest color to start with because you don’t have to do much shading. Other easy colors are chestnut and palomino. With those colors you will have to shade and highlight.
ALWAYS get some reference. A picture or two from a horse book or magazine works well. I have done some horses without reference and they never come out as well.
